I have never welded but my Grandfather (deceased) was a tool maker and his table is about 30x60" and is 1" thick.

This is my friend Gary's shop with one of the welding tables I spoke of. I can go there on the weekends when closed, nice to have friends with tools like this they build trains there

Those acorn type tables are burly. I was looking at just the platen on ebay for ~$3,000 in 5'x5' and weighed 2,000 pounds!
