now I know what you're thinking ...........what the hells a hole in the ground with water in it got to do with an XS650 ..........but imagine my surprise this afternoon when reassembling my 78-79 BS38 carbs to find that the original set of slide springs that came with the bike were 13mm shorter than a spring set that came with a spare set of BS38s I bought last week ?
Well actually I ended up buying 2x sets of BS38s in the end .......but we won't go there .......(intake of breath ....big sigh...)

So which set of springs are correct for a 78-79 ? the original 106mm or the 119mm long springs that came with one of the spare sets of carbs ..?
Well ...on checking the slides in the spare set of BS38s it soon became obvious to me that the internal depth of the spare carb set is deeper due to being incorrectly fitted with the wrong (76-77) slides, needles (4M1 ) and needle jets (Z8 ). (hence buying a second spare set which arrived without ?.....yes no slide springs !)

So I'm assuming that the shorter 106mm slide springs are correctly matched with the 502 needle , Z2 needle jet slide assembly in my original BS38 carb set yes ?
78-79 slide spring shorter (top) 76-77 BS38 slide spring bottom (longer 119mm)

Yes, the shorter springs are for 78-79.
I will add that I have never heard of a 501 needle. I have looked at many, many 78-79 carb sets, and they all have 502 needles.

Great info, guyz.
Slide spring questions came up a few years ago, no answers.
I'll add the early springs, just posting tentative notes here...
