Hi Andy,
the factory cheapskates used 20ga & 18ga because when the bikes were new all the connectors were clean and shiny and they could get away with it.
30+ years later, not so much.
I'd use 16ga & 14ga to rewire. And of course those big fat car battery size wires for the e-start.
