What size MM carburators are on a 1981 Yamaha XS650 Special II?
I think the 1970-1971 XS650 had larger carburators, but the 1972-1984 had
different size?

From 70-79 they used a BS38 carb set. They changed the specs on them every two years so you need to id the year of the carb set for tuning specs. In 80 they changed to a BS34 carb set. It used brass floats for a year or so then went to foam floats, different float level specs depending on brass or foam. www.amckayltd.com/carbguide.pdf will help you understand the carbs better.
