Other than the "cool" appearance of opening up the space behind the engine, what are the advantages of running "pod" type air filters? (What are the disadvantages also?)

They are just like running a sport cold air intake on a car. Air flows more easily through them than the stock air box. More air = more efficient engine. Efficiency = horsepower.

I also believe they have a velocity stack effect. This speeds up the air and gives a better mix of fuel and air.

The very important bit with pods though is, they are most certainly not all created equally, & they do have down sides!

Some cheap filters are just crap. I run K & N's a top quality filter, UNI also make good gear. Some others will rob horsepower or just make the bike untuneable!

Also a standard airbox can have positive effects on a engine, they might not allow the air flow of a quality pod type, but the air box will usually stay dry (pods can get wet & block up). Also the shape of the airbox can lead to better induction!

Of cousre as you mentioned, there's also the cool factor!

Actually, the Yamaha engineers knew what they were doing when they designed the airbox. It gives a neat tidy place to connect the crankcase vents and works in rain or shine!

OK.............its not as "cool" looking:bike:
