I am finalizing my XS650 Cafe Racer build and finishing the wire harness. I am using standard 18 gauge PVC wire from auto parts store. I would like pass part of main harness from through the engine stay mounts located on the top of the engine. This will hide some the harness and make it look as clean as possible. Does anyone have an idea what the top of the engine temperature is? From what I have read, the PVC wire insulation can vary from 60-90C. Being so close to the top of the engine, I am worried about the compromising the wire with this routing method. I was going to place a protective high temp sleeve over the wire as well, but that may not be enough. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

The only stock wiring I recall that has actual physical contact with the head is:

Points wires - has heat sleeve
Condenser wires - has heat sleeve
Black ground wire (top engine mount) - no sleeve

The engine and oil temp threads imply that temps up there could exceed 100°C.
So, heat sleeving would be prudent...

Thanks for the info. Found some 1/4" silicone coated pvc w/fiberglass heat tubing that I will use in the space above the motor.
