has anybody ever replated the chrome on a mirror. I can’t find a reasonably priced NOS one for my XS2 project. Space coast plating said that it will wreck the glass. They told me to break out the glass, or they would, and then have a auto glass company cut a new mirror to fit. Some people have told me that it has a rolled edge over the glass....but it doesn’t appear to be rolled. Any help would be useful. Thanks.

Gator, are you shooting for complete accuracy and originality? If not, if you just need functional for riding, there are some decent alternatives that look pretty good.
A lot of guys have approached this differently. For me , I was using a replacement master cylinder that was already tapped for a mirror, so that took care of the right side. Then for the left, I bought a clamp on mirror perch from eBay.

Retro styled mirrors are also available on eBay. I’ve got long stalk early Honda CB replica mirrors on my XS2.

On my 77, the master also was tapped for a mirror, and on the left side I bought a replacement clutch lever assembly that had a tapped hole for a mirror, then ordered a set of short stalk retro mirrors for it. I think the short stalk look a little tidier, but the long stalk give a better view of what’s behind you. ( That is when they aren’t vibrating too bad! )

Thanks Bob. I’m trying to do the most accurate restoration that I can. Which means 1 left side clamp on mirror. I’ve got one but it needs to be replated. Thanks again.

Might nose around at an OLD yamaha dealer or two if there are any left, there was almost always a box of "extra" rear view mirrors removed or exchanged for various reasons.

As Moabite suggested in the first response to your thread, it would be helpful if you posted a picture of your mirror. I have some early mirrors and clamps, there is a slim chance that I might have what you need, if I knew exactly what that was.

43052517-12B7-4F6E-BC77-F90ECD7C2F68.jpeg I’ve got these 2 left mirrors. The one with threads is from Cindy at speed and sport. She said it’s used. And I think it’s a TX650 mirror. You may or may not see in the picture but the chrome is pretty pitted. The other I got on EBay. I think it’s off a 75 XS something. But it’s got a dent and some rash. I think the shorter one is correct but it shouldn’t be threaded. Thanks.

I have a couple that are close, but I don't quite have the right mirror -- I did say the chance was slim.
BTW, I'm curious why you think it shouldn't be threaded. I looked at this one which you've probably already seen:

The part number appears to be wrong...
    Capture.JPG

The 74 parts catalog does show a clamp-on right-side mirror as an optional accessory...

But the part #s, 29-22 and 29-23 seem to be in some dispute...
If you wanted to go with a right-side clamp-on instead of the left side, I have an original Yamaha mirror with good chrome, not sure from what, that would take a little adapting. It will ship at over a pound, so shipping will be slightly high -- will sell for $25 including shipping.
