Anybody tried to take the rear shocks apart on a standard xs2. Can the top be un-screwed and then put back together. There are large hexagonal looking nuts at the top of the shocks.... must be there for a reason.

On the old honda's I have worked on the rear shocks used collets which could be prized out and a new damper used or cleaned.

Thanks

Hi, nairb, here's pics of a tool I cobbled together 200 years ago.

1 - The shock compression tool
2 - The top was some sort of plumbing trim, don't remember what, just fits over shock cover
3 - Picture alongside XS1B shock, for scaling reference

This worked on a variety of shocks. There is a cushion piece that fits the end of the allthread, couldn't find it.
The Yam shock must be unscrewed as you suspected.
Good luck...

What you have made would work on shocks with collets too. A spring compressor is the way forward.
It seems a same to throw away a working damper just because the springs need a re-chrome. And the things can be cleaned better in bits.

Oh, yeah, used it on several different types of shocks. But this is a one-man tool, rarely have anyone around to help. If you can find a stout fellow willing to help, your situation is a lot easier. Just clamp the bottom in a vise, have your buddy tightly grip and shove down the cover about 1", then you get in there with a pair of wrenches (spanners?), unscrew the top, release pressure on the cover and it's apart. With practice, you two could do it in less than 10 seconds...
