You pack them full of grease and they provide a reservoir of lube for the rod for several years. The shop manual recommends using a moly grease .....
You should also smear the entire length of the advance rod with some grease, not so much for lubing purposes but rather just to protect it from corrosion.
So, you can consider advance rod lubing as a maintenance item, you just don't need to do it very often, say maybe every 5 years or so.
