XS650 custom electric start not working

My XS650 custom starts on the kick but when I press the electric start it just makes a sluggish crunching sound, any ideas.

Hi Bennett and welcome,
Try boosting with a car battery to eliminate low Voltage &/or low cranking amps.
Try bridging the starter solenoid to eliminate faulty starter circuitry.

Then see if the crunching sound seems to be coming from the RH clutch cover area.
do a search on bendix spring.
