3DogNate's '83 XS650 Build

Man you are flying through this rebuild!!Keep it up!! You might even be riding it tonight at this pace!!

Ha, seems that way if you look at the last few posts.... but go look at the first one... I picked up the carcass on 3/30/2013... so I'm really 1.25 years in (though not all of it actively.)

I need to do some fitment today for the forward control brackets today.. (Spacers and threaded rod trimming). I might even be able to do the linkages today also. I'm using T.C. Bros controls so there's not a huge amount of work there. I'm hoping to get to painting the fender and tank in the next 2 weeks. I'm painting a friend's sporty tins at the same time, Hoping that he'll get me his this week so that I can start prepping those. I am for now going to keep the wiring simple, ignition (Stock TCI), head lamp, brakes, electric start (My Honda is kick only, the romance is gone with that one... not a huge fan.) I may add turns, but I've not made accomodations in the fabrication so far. I need to get some gauges on order too... simple black mini gauges will do.

I have most of the remaining parts on hand, I'm shooting for a runner by Aug.

Forward controls are mounted now. I only had to turn a couple of 1/4" spacers for the top and trim a 1/2" off the peg mounting bolts. Now onto the linkages.

Right side linkage is fabricated. I need to paint the tube still. You can see in the second photo how I've modified the rear caliper sow that it swings low instead of having to run it up high.

One more update before I quit for the day.

I went ahead and knocked out another dreaded item off the list. My mustang tank was equipped with a 3/8" NPT petcock bung and two 1/4" NPT bungs. The way my tank is oriented the 3/8" bung would leave a good 1/4 tank of fuel untouched. So I cut out the 3/8" bung and welded in a patch and topped that off with a little body filler. I'm going to run a pair of 1/4" petcocks.

So I am taking advantage of the awesome weather and getting my paint done... Sky blue metal flake.... I'll be adding a white accent stripe on the tank and fender before final clear coat.

Fantastic build. Love the paint. Are your paint services available for hire?

Thanks... And no not really, I'd love to paint regularly but I have no proper facilities... Just a back yard. If I ever get regular access to a paint booth maybe I'll get into it a little more... I can usually only do a couple a year because of weather limits. Last year a set I did took me like 7 weeks to do because of either commitments or weather... :-(

Okay, so I followed Airwolfie's lead on my exhaust. I am using the Pandemonium Choppers' Ya'Mamma exhaust... And in an effort to tame them a bit. I cut the turn out ends off and shoved an 8" baffle into each pipe and welded the turn out back on and followed up with some header paint and a titanium heat wrap. This should do the trick (hanging out to dry)
