rigiddude, good plan! ride it, get the bugs worked out, think about a plan of of changes, alterations, improvements. Then do major stuff in the winter. Looks good, your address nor'easter, but the bike looks European?

hey thanks, good eye !..it was advertised in the "triumph" section of CL as a Bonneville clone. Not even under Yamaha or XS or anything else.
Talk about bugs, just one, BIG One - front end wobble at certain speeds. I think I can nail the culprit(s), but want to ride....dam

Steering bearings,
go to tapered bearings, or check bearing preload at least. A cupped front tire will bring on wobble. Hint to damp, steering wobble push on both handlebars, pulling will just make it worse. I am not suggesting you continue to ride a bike that will wobble but......
Check for a ground wire from the triples to the frame, some years didn't have one some owners didn't think it's important. Current through the bearings will ruin them.

You learn something new every day.

This is a 1979 XS650 affectionatelly known as "Ophelia." She has a TC Brothers hardtail kit, a stripped bare frame and tank. The tank, chain tensioner and sprung seat from Monstercraftman. The headlight and bars are unknown and used from a pile of parts. The mids are used rearsets from a GSXR750. The pipes are welded from a universal kit. Wheels are the stock mags painted black. Forks are lowered 4 inches and brakes are stock front and rear discs with steel braided lines. The motor is stock XS650 (for now) with a Pamco hall effect sensor setup with "Ultimate Coil" and a Hughs Handbuilt PMA. It's "Kick Start" only with a small 12V battery in the fake oil tank under the seat. I also hand fabbed a "Jockey Shifter" setup with a foot operated "Suicide Clutch." Ophelia is a blast to ride and she is very reliable. Not bad for about $3k...:bike:

Very nice! I love the old bikes. Did they come with fork boots?

Yes the 1970 model came with fork boots . This was the Japanese response to the British twins that were very popular at the time.

Nice bikes everyone!

Paulrxs650, I especially enjoyed seeing your pics, since in many ways it gives me a preview of what mine may look like. I'd chosen that basic color scheme too (although I'm still not sure). To me, yours is, for a chopper, very elegant. I have that same tank and I'm curious how far we can travel before running out of gas. :)
