Ye your right, a steering damper. Its a bit twitchy on the front end & it doubles up as a steering lock. The frame is 76' frame but the rear & front end are 91' ZXR 400 and ahd to cut off the original steering lock

love the look and its still pretty original.
If I were to cafe mine I think I would do it the same way but replace the rear fender with a cut down one so that it looked meaner ,more like a Brit Cafe. Keep the original fender assembly for possible future resale. Love the seat

My current xs, just got it back on the road. Frame was done by someone else a few years ago, got the bike in super bad shape and rebuilt it.

Just picked up this '77 650D yesterday...stock or euro style bars will be going back on it. Aside from needing a head gasket (PO re-used the old one) it is in excellent shape. Only 8500 miles on the clock. PO made the rack and adapted Harley sportster mufflers to fit the stock headpipes. It actually sounds pretty good.

I've got Sporster mufflers on my '83 Special. Took me forever to get them to seal on the stock headpipes using adapters and finally some water activated exhaust sealant from the auto parts store but now that they're tight I love the deep low volume rumble and the look like none other I've seen.

Nope. But only the chrome ones are available new, and they certainly look nice.
