Yamaha Brings Back XS Series, Yamaha XSR700 Revealed

Too bad....

The "new" SR400 is the "old" SR500 with shorter stroke, electronics and a fuel injector..

Take the "old" XS650, add a PMA and some sort of fuel injection (for emissions and ease of tuning) and you would have it. Too easy of a solution....

I like it and bet it will be a blast to ride. They did an ok job bringing out some of the xs mod trends with fork brace, dual textured seat, aluminum (maybe clear?) fuel cell and opened up side panels. Some function but certainly trying to hit that genetic look but in current era.
I'm old and still prefer some of the mods created from this forum. But if I'm a guy not interested in wrenching and looking for a fun current model, I'd consider.

Thanx, DownE. I wasn't going to say anything, but .....now.

I guess I'm gettin' too old, but their idea of 'classic nostalgia' is like stickin' a hood emblem on a Toyota and callin' it a resurrection of Elvis's Cadillac...

Yer welcome. I calls 'em like I sees 'em...

Yep, the styling says contemporary streetfighter; if there's any hint of retro/vintage/XS styling on the scoot apart from the paint scheme on the tank, I sure can't see it. And the mix of stuff from the high end (4-piston calipers, standard ABS, aluminum tank) and the bargain basement (conventional damper rod forks, plain Jane shock without variable damping) is very odd indeed. If I were in the market I'd probably opt for the FZ.

Liquid cooling kills the looks of a bike. big ugly radiator, no real fins on the motor. And my biggest complaint with 90% of the todays bikes: The exhaust systems. The exhaust used to be a visual component on a bike. Today they are just ugly add ons. 4 piper Honda's and Kawasaki's. Upswept reverse cone megaphone's. I miss them. At least my Triumph Bonneville has decent retro looking silencers.

I think today's retro means no body panels and showing mechanicals. There's nothing retro about most of them except for lack of bodywork, and sometimes old fashioned suspension. I think Harley Davidson wrote the book on retro.

There are two current bikes that do a good job of old-time styling: the Honda CB1100 and the neo-Bonneville are both very pretty samples of traditional design. Of course if you want the real thing there's the Enfield Bullet, in continuous production for around 70 years.

I don't mind the look of the XSR; for me a bike is about the ride, not the look. But somebody at Yamaha appears to have the idea that marketing spin can trump reality, and I find that mindset deeply objectionable.

Plain ugly and too 'busy' looking
.. Im not a fan of watercooled bikes..Rads & pipes spoil the look!

More new poop:( Yamaha won't make a "real" retro bike bike because no one will spend the crazy money they would want for it. 6k for a SR400 :wtf:
