Did not make it home in one piece

Okay a bit of a thread steal....sorry in advance.

No need for apology. I don't have any more to tell. Unless you want me to start listing all of my personal problems. :hijack:

1. All the best, 2M, hate to hear it when something like that happens. The ice and rum treatment sounds good though.

2. I also have an XS650B. Hasn't got a handle, and I don't see where one would have been. I've had the devil of a time getting it up on the center stand. I can grab the frame, but it's at the wrong height to get any leverage at all. I've watched all kinds of YouTube videos and read a bunch of threads here, but so far, my only successful solution involves pressing my big, strong son into service. Any suggestions welcome, and especially any information about adding a handle.

Look at 5twins grease zert mod for the center stand.
The handle was on the left side of the frame rail 3-4 inch's forward of the fender/ turn signal bolt. IIRC 3/8's round stock works well for this repair.
I'd picture you but am mobil for a few more days.

sorry to hear that 2M . Best thing I've found for any inflamatory condition is Naproxen 500mg twice daily . it nearly always works on my spine within a few days. It reduces the pain better than Co-promimal 500/30mg .
Gel packs from the freezer works good too. Most of the pain often comes from the inflamation, swelling and tissue odema

I cannot manage to lift my bike onto the centre stand at all . I thought it was you that suggested pushing the rear wheel onto a 3/4" thick piece of plywood to reduce height you need to lift the bike ?

Bad day yesterday. Saw your post, found some Naproxen 220mg. Much better! Thanx, Johnny!

Typing left-handed. Different.

I thought it was RoyBoy with the plywood trick...

Been doing the 'Napoleon' right-hand thing, plus better living thru chemistry.
Whole right forearm sore, from elbow to wrist, but improving.

Cooked-up a strap trick to get the bike on the centerstand.
Used an old tie-down strap, with included hook.

Slip the strap over your shoulder, hook into the frame near the shock upper.
Starting with bike on sidestand, left hand grabs left handgrip.
Apply a little upward lift with the strap, while getting the bike vertical.
Right foot on centerstand lever.
Right hand, well..., in my case, stuck in the shirt.
For you healthy chaps, right hand gripping the frame/bar in the usual manner.
Step/press down on centerstand lever.
Feel for getting both centerstand pads firmly on the ground, they'll help to hold the bike level.
Lift the bike with the strap while stomping down on the centerstand lever, as though you're trying to tear them apart.
*Bingo*, bike's now on centerstand.

Be very clear-headed and cognizant of what's happening, because this requires complete commital.
Don't want to go down with the ship...

Hi 2many,
centrestands is just for wheel changes, chain retensioning and drum rear brake adjustment.
Anything else, just use the sidestand, eh?
What I used to do when I rode solo was carry a cigarette-package sized rectangle of aluminum sheet with a length of cord wrapped round it in my riding jacket pocket to shove under the sidestand foot to stop the stand sinking into soft ground.
Stop the bike, kick the sidestand out, hold the string by the loop at the top, drop the plate, shove it under the sidestand with your boot toe, drop the loop over the mirror and get off the bike.
If you forget the bastard when you drive off, you'll notice it rattling about on it's string real quick.

Hope every body is healing up and feeling closer to normal today.

Fred.....I just like the idea of the bike on the centerstand and put it there when I can. The stock lifting handle was "just" a bit too high for me to get a good pull on. 3" would have made a world of difference.....story of my life. I kinda like 2Ms strap deal.....going to look into that. I need to fab up something one way or the other.....everythings got to be perfect for me to do it right now. Loosing upper body strength has a lot to do with it.....too many (pun intended) birthday cakes.

Ya'll heal up...ya hear???? Gordon in NC.....who will find some time soon to start adding to a couple of threads I'm running behind on.

OH.....and I'm riding two wheels to an event in OHIO next month.....and I already have a room reserved......what a puss. Do as I say, not as I do. insert smiley/laughing face.

Hi Gord,
so you want another 3", eh? Yeah, me too but this ain't that forum, this one is about motorcycles.

You mean this thing here?
imageedit_1_6162612181.png

Yeah, lo and behold, my bike doesn't have one. However, closer inspection revealed that some PO had removed it. Probably the same one who took off the center stand.

You can see where something used to be welded to the frame. Think I'll try 2Ms strap trick and see if I even need to replace it.

Thanx, Fred. But, I hope you won't mind if I, and others, use the centerstand during:
- Oil changes, sump filter servicing
- Chain cleaning/lubing
- Spoke checks/tightening
- Tire inspections, air
- Wheel cleaning
- Fillups at the gas station (for those center-positioned gas caps)
- Any form of front end checks and servicing
- General tuneups
- Tweaking and synchronizing carbs
- All those left cover pulls doing them clutch actuation experiments

And, the bike simply takes up less room in my tiny barn thataway.

Michaelp, Gordon, do you fellows have a helper or observer for if/when you try this?
At least to call 911?

Sometimes, I'll pre-dial 911 on my smartphone, have it setting close by, finger hovering over "dial"...

I didn't, but I was sure thinking it would have been a good idea while trying to extricate myself from being trapped under the bike. My son was in the basement and probably wouldn't have heard a thing. Fortunately, I escaped without having to gnaw my leg off.

Yes Michael, that's the handle I was talking about and when I mounted my hard bags I had to cut it off for them to work. BUT.....it was always a bit high for me anyway and never was a lot of help.

I just got through lubing the chain on the only bike I have that doesn't have a centerstand and the motorcycle lift is busy with a 1955 Vespa strapped to it....and..... boy was that task a pain....ugh.

Okay......for me at least I "think" I have found the answer for my handleless XS650B. I dug through a box of bits I have on the shelf and came up with a folding footpeg with mount.....just so happens it's a Yamaha bit but I have no clue where it came from. No photos yet because I'm still messing around with the fit but it will mount to the bikes frame. When not in use the peg will fold down out of the way.(upside down from normal)....when I need it, I just reach down and fold it up and it gives me a handle to help lift the bike...and....Bob's yer uncle.

WHEN I FINALLY get some spare time I'll take some photo's of the finished results.....and catch up on threads I'm late on.....AND answer emails and PM's.....right now roofers are on the job and they work from daylight to dark.....ugh.

Take care and I hope everybody is healing up???????

I've never had an uncle named Bob, 'till now. I like your swing-out handle idea. Reminds me of that handle that folks slip into the car door's frame, to get in/out of the car. This could be a viable product.

Take care and I hope everybody is healing up???????

Thanx, Gordon. My pain is finally gone, and I can rotate my wrist a little more than 90° now...

Removed the side stand from my XS650, but I used to pop it (and my /2 series Beemers, back in the day) onto the stand like this.
1. Park bike on level surface.
2. Set left foot on center stand lever.
3. Grab edges of seat with both hands.
4. Put full weight on left foot and stand up--lift with the leg, not the arms or back. If you have to, bounce the scoot forward and let fork rebound help.
Glad you're healing up, 2M.

We're starting a club! Kids are moving tomorrow. Still no heavy lifting for me.

Sorry for the bad luck, 2many.

Are we going to start the 3M club, those of the walking wounded ?

Okay a bit of a thread steal....sorry in advance.

Peanut, my XS650 is a B model and the handle I'm talking about is actually the one on the frame not the seat/rack/sissy bar.......

Glad you're feeling better Marty.......word has it Mick is struggling with pain and swelling (ugh) 2M probably has some of that today too.

Geeze fellows.......we're getting old...heh?

Your friend in NC, USA Gordon Gray

Here is mine, blue tie down is for when I want to carry "Stuff" your right Gordon, i've been struggling 24 days since the fracture today, went to the workshop on Monday which was a really bad move, that set me back, all keen and gun ho, but tell my fractured foot that, yesterday I spent out of it on prescription pain killers, and now, today I have backed them off, went down and started my 650, which I just want to ride. So set the priorities,

1/ get foot stronger
2/ take off centre stand and "feel" the weight from side to side, that will be the determining factor as to when I can ride again.
3/ get boot onto foot without injuring myself
4/ take valium and go for a ride... Ha!

Thanks for all the kind words too guys, the forum has been great as I've just joined, and I see that friends can be made, plenty of banter which is good. I hope I can add to the knowledge base here, cannot see my "B" being sold, it's a nice ride and gives me something to tinker with.....

Hi 2many, you ol' literalist you,
Let me condense your list:-
Sidestands is for parking.
Centrestands is for servicing.
And you obviously need a bigger barn. With space for a shop crane.

Fred, 2M, I nearly removed my sidestand due to lack of use.....I use my centerstand for all parking, fuel, etc, glad I didn't though, do you remember the pic I had from the last long ride I did? Broken, but now repaired....stronger now
