So I had been experiencing backfiring and popping noises in my exhaust. Took the carbs apart and look at this stuff!!

Id heard, or someone in this forum has said XS650 carbs accumulate a lot of crap, but look at this! How can I keep this from happening again?

Looks like there may have been some water sitting in there. If you use ethanol gas and do not ride a lot or not keep the tank full you can absorb water. It sits on the bottom of the tank and is drawn into the carbs and corrodes the bowls. Do you run filters? How do you store the bike in the winter?

Ive only had the bike since August. its pretty clean but I have no idea of the habits of the previous owner. I got the gunk out and yes I run filters and now I put MMO and Seafoam in the tank.....LOTS!

Start off clean and fit an inline fuel filter. Also, if you remove your petrol tap you may find that the pipes that allow for the on/reserve action have been removed so you are drawing fuel from the bottom of the tank where the crap sits. Mine were missing so I made some replacements out of brass tube.

new filters have been put in and the petrol tap pipes are ok. I just want to make sure it NEVER gets that much gunk in it.

First off...................Those bowls are not off your XS650......................

Second, .....................................no where in your threads has some one said the XS650 carbs accumulate a lot of crap.................In fact no carbs will ever accumulate crud like that unless they have been sitting for a long time.

Third. ...................Recently, within a couple of weeks, your Mechanic has just done a carb clean..............no way could that happen on a bike running as good as yours supposedly does.

Conclusion......................A literally of lies

it seems and "ignored member" has commented again. I would advise you all to ignore the comment as well. This person continually stalks me and has nothing positive to add. I havent even read the comment, but I know its 650skull.

May we all stay on script? Thanks!

Here are two more photos of my bike's carb and the tank and whatnot off the bike.

I am puzzled by that carburetor and the shape of the floats. I am puzzled by the fact that I thought it was Friday evening.

My concern is that there is a lot of corrosion showing in the photo of the carburetor. This is often typical of damp conditions for a prolonged time. I suggest stripping the carburetor bodies and giving them a good scrub with a brass or S/Steel brush until they are spotless. Personally I would then give them a good wash with water to remove any salt contamination followed by meths and then petrol. Then reassemble and check in a week or two.

Does anyone know if the alloy used to make the carburetors has to be pickled to prevent or halt corrosion?

Yamaha77, "stay on script" .... really???? Maybe you should follow your own advice, lol. The carbs you showed us aren't even from a 650 Yamaha. They're Bing slide carbs, most likely from an R50 or R60 BMW. What's up with that ??? Why show us BMW carbs and say they're off your Yamaha 650 ??? Did you think no one would notice? You're just wasting everyone's time here. Go play with your Facebook friends or something.

BWHAHAHAHA. 5twins from my limited experience you are dead nuts on. I started to take some pics of an extra set in the shop but he and his thread aren't worth the trouble.
.

If you have managed to fit a different type of carburetor then the story is the same. They need to be thoroughly cleaned. Also the photo looks like there is a crack in a sealing surface - could be a source of water ingress.
