gggGary's latest XS project "madness"

Gary: I have never heard an XS650 sound like that. It almost sounds like a 4 cylinder - and a very mean & snarley one too!

I'll bet it goes like sh!t through a goose!

Pete

Pete; it's real lean right now, couldn't get it up on the mains. Idle is fine, needles OK, mains not even close. These carbs have been sitting untouched 4 years... But it was all about feeling and hearing the motor today and that sounds great.

I got this to look forward to in the morning.

Am I the only one who's bench ends up looking like this after a big push?

Oil on the lift under the RH cover some snooping and the oil line exiting the cover was the problem.

There just wasn't enough meat and a look at the hole/threads showed the builder had problems.
so after a bit of work I have this now.

Also added these bends so the throttle cables clear the petcock. Used a cut off wheel in the dremel to shorten the sheath at the 2 into 1 junction. Still gotta do something about the fuel lines.madness oil line (6).jpg
And I put on a new bench top, (clean for a few hours)

pics below kinda detail getting the new hole cut and threaded. The hollow area in the cover immediately walked the drill bit so...

No pics today but I got the "real" gas tank back on, Went through the petcocks; cleaned, polished and flipped the rubber 'valves' over and they are back on the job. Still not happy with fuel line routing, tried making 'better " elbows, no joy. It wasn't revving out the other day. So pulled mains and went up from 200s to 210s AND found one was plugged with green goo. Had to mess a with the throttle cables a bit more to get the slides to drop fully and evenly. Fired it up and just rode around the driveways. The rear tire is ancient and rock hard, did a 20 foot burnout from a rolling start going up hill on dry pavement with no clutching. Oh yeah, Madness is back! ordered new 777 shinko's for front and rear. No oil drips so the oil line thread repair is holding.

The rock hard tire don't hurt. Still.... that's damned impressive for an XS:)

...

thats way too clean and organised G ....you'll probably spend hours trying to find all your tools now .:)
You've certainly been busy....Its way too cold for the shed at the minute but herindoors won't let me bring my engine into the house ......:(

I'll tell this story on myself.
Madness was on the lift a couple months ago I had the rear wheel apart getting dimensions for the pentagram wheel project. I turned some new axle spacers for the custom swingarm on it and put it back together, It sat in the garage over winter Then i thought lets see whats "really" up with the motor. That's when this thread started back up and a couple days ago i fired it and took it out a couple times. When I did that burnout I heard an odd but fairly serious "tink" from the rear somewhere. worked on it yesterday and this morning getting it ready for a trip to see how it was behaving. JUST before i lowered the lift i thought lets take a look for that mysterious tink. THAT's when I found one of only TWO installed rear sprocket bolts had backed out and hit the shock mount, the other was loose. Oops, had the sprocket off while measuring and had just finger tightened a couple bolts to make the axle spacers, then lost track of that little detail! That was all that supplied power for a 4 mile test ride and that burnout, gulp. Cleaned, chased threads and installed 6 bolts with lock tabs.
Was in the 40's today so got out and put on 40 miles, but no video. :( Only this boring still shot.

The ride went very well, saw 85 and it really liked to be going 70! Plenty fast on tires that were already rock hard 4 years ago. It seems to like the 210 mains, need to fatten the idle mix a smidge and maybe lift the needles a notch. With the tall gearing it's a little hesitant launching from a stop. Just like in the video from 4 years ago. Suspension is a bit stiff on our frost heaved roads but will wait for more "normal" air temps and the new tires before changing anything there.
