What have you done to your XS today?

Thanks Thuban, I thought this was the case. I have read threads in the past about using HEI modules but the issue is always the need for an advance mechanism. A few comments back there a reference to HEI (Toyota) being cheaper than Boyer, but the Boyer Units have electronic advance programmed in so the installation/conversion is fairly easy. Straight out ignition units without advance are very common and cheap. It would be nice if we found an electronic advance unit for the SX which could be coupled to any igniter of our choice. The XS points system will easily adapt to most igniters.

Tiesco, where is the timing advance dealt with? Is it programmed into the module or does the distributor have mechanical advance? I wonder if anyone out there is still using static timing where the advance is permanently fixed at approx. 38 degrees, even at idle?

Thank you.

IIRC MrRiggs installed the reluctor on stock advance shaft, retaining mechanical advance unit.

There is a couple of guys on here that do a little Micro-min and solid state work. They may be able to lay their minds on something. I'd have to hit the books and I can't keep what little I have up there now from running out! It goes somewhere! :umm:
I like the point system. I have an old 48 ford tractor that is my little work horse. I built it up in 92 and about 2K hours now. It's on it's second set of points. It starts when nothing else around here will. Hummmm My Can-Am 4 X 4 uses a black box w/ solid state advance, idle and all that, but $600 bucks for the box, I'll stick to points. The PO had to replace the box. I been lucky so far.

Guys, I think all the time given due to Covid 19 needs to give way to some creative engineering for this to make it work. Would be nice to see all these junk yard parts being repurposed come to life for our beloved XS bikes. This is all above my head for sure. JC

Did I do it right Dad?!?!?! lol, I'm going to switch my handlebar mount HL switch to just this switch. It's a two way, and I was seeing if I had the wiring guess correct before I started lol. Just to save some wire testing time. I only saw two ways to wire it. What's the correct way?

These parts fit almost like it was mean to be. Notice how the plate for the pickup fits perfectly against lip on the points plate. The reluctor also fits onto the advance rod nice and snug.

The camshaft arrived today. Now all I need is the gaskets and this whole ignition experiment shoukd be good to go by the time I get everything back together.

And on that note. Should I get some new rings? I know you guys suggested I break the glaze on the cylinders but should I get some rings as well or will they seat in again as a result of the honing?

If the gaps are within specs I'd reuse 'em. They only have 2-300 miles on 'em. As long as you re-hone, they'll seat.

Ran the blockade and dragged this home in the van.
