Never noticed this before but there’s an exposed thread with no nut on it behind the front sprocket. A quick google came up with a mixed bag of nuts and no nuts, should there be one on there?
Also of note in rsor's pic is the wire harness clip attached to the case just to the right of the sprocket. Yours is missing. It's imperative to route the alternator wiring harness correctly and keep it away from the chain (or it will cut it). That clip you're missing is part of it.
This was the issue with an '83 my buddy and I picked up a couple years ago. It wasn't charging so we got it for a good price. It wasn't charging because the P.O. didn't route the alternator harness correctly and the chain had cut into it .....
Hi DogBunny,
OTOH the inner chain guard interferes with an 18T/slock chain or a 17T/O-ring chain set up,
Yes, my bike's O-ring chain has gnawed two little grooves in the shifter shaft but it's taken 30+ years to make 'em.
Thanks all. I’ll have to dig through the boxes of parts that came with this bike to see if the guard and harness clip are there. I’ll figure something out if not
