    Grinding a carb slide cutaway...

Here was today’s set up... MJ: 190 PJ: 22.5 NJ: P6 JN: 6F9 3rd slot Slide: 2.0 Air Screw: 2 turns out I’ll see how the plugs look once I get out on the bike this week.

Ok, I’ll try to file the flat bottom of the 2.5’s like 5twins mentioned instead of trying to enlarge the 2.0’s. I have been running.. Main: 200 Pilot: 25 Needle clip: 3rd detent I can’t recall what needle and needle jet are in there currently. They came “tuned” from TC Bros with their stock...

    Grinding a carb slide cutaway...

Short update... My ignition system checked out okay. I left all of the jetting untouched and switched back to my original 2.0 slides from the 2.5’s. What a change in performance. No hesitation at all and a strong pull regardless of how fast the throttle is opened. You could barely advance the...

    Grinding a carb slide cutaway...

Thanks, I’ll take a look on Monday. It’s mounted to the front of the fender which is open to airflow, it’s hard to tell in that picture.

    Grinding a carb slide cutaway...

Thanks Grizld1, Last fall I developed a problem with my reg/rec and it would only produce a charge above approximately 1500 rpm where the voltage would then follow rpm. In traffic or at idle the battery would be discharging. I wonder if that may have had something to do with it? That being...

    Grinding a carb slide cutaway...

Thanks for all the information. I don’t have much knowledge about the secondary effects on these VM’s. I’m running pod filters on these VM34’s with a 700cc engine and a 2-1 exhaust. I had the bike tuned on a dyno by a reputable and experienced guy once I had it running after the rebuild. The...

Ahhhhh, I misunderstood. It would be worth a try before getting into the cutaway curve. Definitely easier.

I might be able to find someone with a lathe...thanks for the idea.

I don’t think sanding the flat top of the slide would have any effect as it’s the bottom cutaway bore that determines fuel/Air ratio.

Unfortunately changing the pilot jet or needle won’t have much effect on the 1/4 throttle open fuel/air ratio. It’s mostly slide cutaway at that point and that’s where I seem to spend most of my time cruising around.

    Grinding a carb slide cutaway...

The number does refer to the size of the cutaway. A 2.5 slide is leaner than a 2.0 slide because it has a larger cutaway. From what I understand I would have to file approximately .010” off of a 2.0 slide to turn it into a 2.25 slide. I’m just trying to find a way to file both slides...

    Grinding a carb slide cutaway...

Would anyone have any tips on grinding/filing a carb slide cutaway? I had a 2.0 slide installed on my VM34’s but I was getting the black plugs after 50 mile problem. Throttle response was great though. I moved to a 2.5 slide to cure that problem but now my initial throttle response is poor due...

    Advance mechanism causing kickback?

Thanks for the replies. I’ll be checking the timing once the bike is running again. Upgrading to the Pamco Hall effect E-ignition system should solve the advance mechanism problem? I had considered upgrading last season but now may be the time. Liam

    Advance mechanism causing kickback?

The timing has been checked and was even adjusted a small amount to help but it wasn’t enough to make a significant difference. I’m running the Pamco set up that the previous owner had installed.

    Advance mechanism causing kickback?

I’ve been having problems kickstarting since I had my engine rebuilt last season. About half of my kick start attempts result in a pretty good kickback. I decided to replace the advance springs this winter to see if that will help the problem and I found that even with new springs the mechanism...
