Hi I took my xs 650 for a ride yesterday and the bike was ent running right .I got home and thought maybe iam getting low on gas .While the bike was not running I turned the petcock to reserve position and left the bike .After half an hour I went back to the bike and saw that gas was leaking .I took the seat off and air filter box off and could see that gas was leaking into my right air filter from the carb.how can I fix this do I have to take carbs off .thanks shane

This happened to me....my left float was stuck....tapping with a ball peen hammer stopped the leak as it loosened my float...but an immediate carb removal and clean followed.

If you have factory vacuum petcocks and it leaks when not running in the reserve positon the petcocks need an overhaul too. Do not expect the float valve to act as a fuel shut off when the bike is not running. What year, how many miles, are the fuel lines new, has the tank been cleaned, sealed?

If they are black or "original" the fuel lines are not OK. The rubber gets hard and little chunks flake off the inside, the flakes drop down and block the float valve open, seen it a "bunch" of times. I will not put an original fuel line back on an old bike. The bike is 35 years old a certain amount of replacement of worn out, aged parts is needed. Hint; the hydraulic brake lines start to flake on the inside also.

Hello ethanol blended fuels sitting in bike, liquid water phase forms, separates with water borne crud sitting in the bottom of the tank, petcock & carb then fouling the float needle valve, jets and passageways. Now we got another thorough carb cleaning coming! Don't forget the petcock too. Blue

As was mentioned by gggGary the type of petcock makes a difference where you set the lever. On the standard petcock you use the off position when the bike is not running. The vacumm petcocks you leave in the on position. Being vacumm operated the fuel is shut off when the bike is not running. When the bike starts engine vacumm opens the petcock.
I would check the petcock's for positive fuel shut off. Run the fuel line into a glass jar, leave the petcock in the proper posirtion for fuel shut off then let it set over night. Any fuel in the jar means the petcocks are leaking.
I would also suggest reading www.amckayltd.com/carbguide.pdf Using the carb guide I would remove, disassemble, clean, inspect, your carbs. If any parts or gaskets are found damaged replace them. Reassemble, reinstall. Adjust as required.

I did take the carbs off and clean them and found a brocken gasket and replaced.I also set the float height to 24 mm it was 26 mm before on the right carb.I also checked the pet cocks and found that the plastic tube had fell off into the tank ,so it took me a while to get out and put back together .I will change the oil today also can I use yamalube sae 10w-40 as I have some at home.or should I use sae 30w or sae 20-40 w thanks

Most of us use 20W-50. 20W-40 was Yamaha's original spec but is very hard to find. 10W-40 would probably be OK now while the weather is still cold but I would switch to the 50 once it warms up.

Of those choices I would use the 20w40, the 30w then the 10w40. The 10w40 would be ok in cold weather for short rides. The 30w in warm to hot weather for short to medium rides. The 20w40 for cool to hot weather, short to medium long rides. The 20w50 for temps cool to very hot, most riding.
