so if my coil has a big black blob of plastic that appears to have oozed out around where the ignition wires come in, i'm assuming its fried right?

Is there anyway to keep your ignition safe in the case of leaving the key on or starting the bike with a plug cap off?

The second thing I can't help you with. As for the first, my kill switch disintegrated in arctic winter. It froze to death. So I eliminated it. If the kill switch is eliminated there's no chance you'll leave the ignition switch on with the bike not running.

The only way to protect the ignition is to stop the flow of power to the ignition.
This means not leaving the key on.
As far as protecting it with a plug cap of is to not leave a plug cap off.
When doing plug changes or testing or anything that might threaten the ignition make sure everything is hooked up right before you power it up and try running it.
Not an impossible task.

WRONG :yikes:

What if you stall it........ or run out of fuel................. or get knocked off and it stops..... Get the drift :wink2:
