hey guys just have a quick question i see a lot of guys with aftermarket mufflers on their bikes and im just wondering if its possible to cut the header pipes to a desired length and slip the mufflers over them or are there headers that i need to buy to do that, im just not sure if the area where they are welded together on original onepiece header/mufflers would keep me from doing that thanks in adavnce

ya im definitely gonna try that but what i was asking was are people cutting the mufflers off their original pipes or buying aftermarket header pipes to be able to install slipons

that's 'Zakly what he did, cut special mufflers off stock headers use the adapter to keep both inner and outer pipes aligned..

People do both. Personally, I prefer aftermarket headpipes because the I.D. is slightly larger than stock and that's better for performance. The original double walled pipes are very small inside, only about 1.25".

Also - aside from the tins (fuel tank and side covers) an original exhaust system is one of the few parts of an XS650 that is nearly impossible to find - at just about any price.

It seems a huge mistake and shame to cut one up when aftermarket replacements are readily available for not much money.

If you don't want your original exhaust system - there are almost certainly people on this forum who would be happy to buy it from you for waaaayyyy more than the cost of an aftermarket header which might actually work better on your bike.

….just my $0.02....

Just an opinion but the aftermarket headers look better as well. They follow the lines of the frame instead of curving/splaying outward.
