I recently got a custom bike. It doesn't have a title. The engine is from an XS650 but I have no idea what the frame is. I think it may be custom but maybe someone has an idea. Currently a project and may need help figuring some of this wiring nightmare out. Another question I have is I saw on mikesxs I saw a rectifier they were selling for a 70-79 xs650 and the model# I searched came up as a regulator rectifier for an r6. I think my engine is an 80 and I happen to have an r6 regulator could I use that for my bike. I also bought a Chrysler regulator to use.

The type of regulator you need will depend on what charging system you have. The motor is a 1980 or newer 650 from the looks of it. If it still has the stock charging system then that Chrysler regulator may work. But you really haven't given us enough info to say for sure. We need to see the alternator area. That's the spot on the lower left side of the motor where that round cover is missing. A stock '80 and newer would look like this .....

Welcome to the party, msmith! No title, huh? Maybe keep your eyes peeled for a donor Xs frame with a title (somebody's project, abandoned before they chopped it up too bad? Or complete, but in boxes... it happens...). As for that wiring? Yeechhh. You may want to determine the year, for certain, get a new wiring harness (from MikeXs?), and start from scratch. Otherwise, you could be chasing bugs for a long time. You didn't mention if you have a manual. They are pretty indispensable. Yamaha, Chilton's, and Clymer's will tell you everything you need to know. And the Clymer's book has good, nicely detailed wiring schematics for all years. You gotta get (at least) one! But, before you start throwing money into it, do the bare minimum to get it started. You got it as somebody else's project, so it's important to hear it go "VROOM", even just once. These motors are only slightly more complicated than a lawn mower, so unless it's seized, or had some kind of catastrophic failure, it's hard for these to not run. Send lots of pictures (we're nosy! :wink2: ) and keep us updated with your progress (did I mention, we're nosy? ). Good luck, and best wishes! More BEER!!!

Not quite as bad as the welded on shifter but definitely some bubba going on there. I'm not sure a stock harness will be of much help here as there are not a lot of the stock connectors there to hook up to. I would start with the TC Brothers charging harness and work out from there. Would look into what's involved in getting a title in your state before going much further.

Build one from scratch.
Up in the TECH section you will find a listing titled "Some Electrical Diagrams"
I like #4. It shows a basic points system with separate reg and rec. In boxes it has the later TCI and Combo reg/rec. Just swap boxes to match what you have.
This diagram leaves out all the Naderisms of the later models.
E-start is in upper right corner.
You can scroll down through the list to find a stock 80 diagram, or a simplified version.
On the frame, does it have any numbers stamped into the frame? If so you might be able to get your State police or DMV to run the number to see if it was stolen or ever registered.
If no number you can contact these same folks, telling them you built the frame and need a number. For a fee they might inspect the frame and stamp a number.

There is a vin # on the frame but it doesn't go to anything. It looks like it was stamped by someone into the frame. I temporarily wired up the tci and got it to fire up. I plan on just making my own wire harness. I looked up the Vin that is stamped into the frame and the Vin on the engine and neither come up as stolen this is the bike when I got it

Mystery frame...... Brat styled with the rear shock angle and again it looks to have been setup for a single carb IF it's a stock frame.....spring cups for the seat. The small sidecover may be a clue to its origin.
Early style rim on the rear. If the rear tire bounces up and hits the fender try some longer shocks.
I kinda like it.....

I like it other than the giant apes on it. I need a chain, throttle, wiring done, a new seat, and engine mounts figured out. It is mounted in the front and one underneath it but the back 2 don't line up. The side cover has wires going through it for the lights. Also it does have 2 carbs on it how exactly do the carbs work I traded a kz650 and the carbs were easy to work with but I have never seen these.

No chain on it, eh? Makes ya wonder if a chain on it will line up from front to rear sprocket as its not an xs frame.
You've got some sorting to do before you need to address the carbs methinks.
