I know this topic has lots of mileage on it , so I’m just looking for a 32 rear , I’m running a 76

Any info appreciated!

Happy Saturday everyone

I’m running a 76
A 76 came with an 18” rear wheel.
I’ll pass on this experience.
When I put a 32 tooth rear on a Special II which had a 130/90-16 rear tire I thought that 32 tooth sprocket was like magic ! Wonderful gearing.
Later I put a 32 on my 78 Standard which had a 120/90-18 and a very healthy engine. That result was not as pleasing. Running for top speed I could feel the lack of power and wished I had installed a 33 tooth rear on that Standard.

I like the up1/down 2 combos. 18/34 or 17/32 does give a slightly longer stretch in each gear. I am not worried about "Running for top speed" and rarely get over 70 in bursts, generally 55 or so is what I ride on my county roads. All ratio selections represent a trade-off,, choose what suits you best.

That’s interesting! I have almost the exact background experience to why I want to do this
I’m currently running a 33.

What front are you running on your standard? 17? 18 ?

Thanks for your insight !

Cheers

I feel the same way. I have a 32T on the 16" rear wheel of my Special and it's wonderful. I had the sprocket already because I tried it on my Standard with it's 18" rear wheel. Not good, robbed too much of the lower gear "lunge" and take off power. On that 18" rear wheel, I now run an 33T and think it is ideal. This is what Yamaha put on the European bikes and I think it matches the engine's power output very well. Here's a gearing chart and, as you can see, the 18"-33t closely matches the 16"-32T, the later being just a hair higher. I only run the stock 17T up front. I don't see the point of using an 18T up there, what with the possible clearance issues, and I think it gears the bike too high. You have to remember, we're only dealing with about a 50HP machine here ......
