What have you done to your XS today?

nah. she runs pretty smooth at 75-80 actually right around 6000 rpm... seems antithetical to what you'd expect but hey, I'm not complaining. :bike:

What have you done to your XS today?

Monday was the first day it hit 90 degrees in central california this year, and I hopped on the '81 Special, happy to be in a T-shirt... I made it down to the coffee shop a mile away before the bike bogged and died. I got some coffee while the bike sat in the sun for an hour, and then I kicked...

What have you done to your XS today?

I finished my Center Mount Speedometer this weekend. I had to cut up the stock bracket quite a bit to make it work, and since centering the speedo would hit both the headlight and the key, I had to come up with a riser solution. I like how it turned out, and it's nice to have a gauge again, if...

What have you done to your XS today?

made a tach delete cap from an old Telecaster knob. [/IMG] also worked on modifying my tach/speedo mount... cutting it up and raising it to center mount the speedo.

    Bad Head Torquing?

Kon- yes, a little back and forth is fine. As long as the stud is screwed all the way into the case, there's no problem. They are also oil passageways, so there has to be a bit of room around them- make sure nothing falls in there when you're wiggling them around!

    Bad Head Torquing?

XS Leo- I meant socket wrench! Torque wrench must have been on my brain back then... Anyway, thx for the advice. Ended up tearing down the top end over Xmas. Runs great now, no leaks. Also, Kon, do you mean the studs wobble in the passages with the nuts removed? That's normal for such long...

What have you done to your XS today?

Did my valves tonight. The right side intake was loose (.005) so I'm thinking that was the source of my ticking noise. Ill fire her up tomorrow and see.

    Jonny Reb's '81 Build

As much as I dig my leather belt-seat, it was time for something new… My buddy gave me a bunch of Honda parts a while ago when he cafe'd his stocker, so I've had this really nice seat taking up room in the garage. I cut the pan narrow, hammered on it a bit to reshape, cut the foam way down, and...

What have you done to your XS today?

Here's another pic of the new seat I built this weekend. [/IMG] I also went in search of a ticking that's popped up in the last 50 miles… sounds like a valve to me (which would make sense since I just did the top end 300 miles ago) but I figured I'd check other places first, in the...

What have you done to your XS today?

built a new seat this weekend out of a Honda 650 saddle. narrowed and shortened the pan and shaved the foam, then stretched the upholstery again. I like it ok... It's much more comfy than my solo seat and the wife can ride comfortably again. At some point I might hand my stock XS seat over to my...

    Pesky ticking

Yeah, I had the same problem with my '81- headlight would rattle like a SOB as the RPM increased. I mostly fixed it… I took dual-barb, hollow rubber weatherstripping (like you have around the doors in your house) and carefully fitted it into the small space between the headlamp glass and the...

What have you done to your XS today?

also did this... hopefully this will remind me to turn the damn gas on before I take off. I had to put an in-line shutoff in my fuel line do to a leaky petcock and I have broken down after 1/4 mile about 5 times in the past couple days because I can't seem to remember to turn it on. Who's using Honda Rebel shocks?

joining this one pretty late, I realize, but I thought I'd throw in my .02. I run new Rebel shocks on my '81 Special, stock frame. I had to remove the chain guard and the clearance between the chain and the shock skirt is about 1/16 inch, so it's about as close as it can get and still work. I...

    Jonny Reb's '81 Build

got my bike back from my buddy's shop... he did a bunch of work on the frame. Cut off the rear loop and re-attached it minus about 6 inches of frame, custom sissy and license plate mount, 34 Ford taillight, bobbed fender and some shaving of the frame from unnecessary stuffs. Next will be a new...

What have you done to your XS today?

changed my oil since it's been 200 miles since I did the top-end. Some Flakes but nothing too bad. I cleaned the filter in the right side of the case, and I wanted to replace the sump filter but I realized I don't have a new gasket... my guess is it's never been done, which is sort of scary, but...
