1977 model leaking exhaust gasses from drain holes ?

FWIW, my '78 CB550K has the drain holes in the 4-4 Honda pipes. In certain weather conditions, water drips from them right after she starts until she's warmed right up. I think the CBX does as well - I just fitted a replacement Sankei set (OEM suppliers who ran some off on request from owners'...

    15W-40 vs 20W-50 oil

I do so enjoy these oil threads :poke: Just to stir things up a little more, I use a house brand (Canadian Tire) fully synthetic 5W50 in everything but the Kawasaki triple. The Hondas have wet clutches and the BSA a dry clutch and I haven't detected any slippage. I like the idea that the oil...

    Oil smoke on trailing throttle

Righty-oh, then. I'll do a compression check myself and take a peek up the ports as well. It can only come from one of three places so it's just a matter of elimination, I guess. If retorquing doesn't help, the head will have to come off anyway so if that's the case, I'll probably go the...

    Oil smoke on trailing throttle

The bike is new to me so I don't know its engine history. The P.O. did a fine job redoing the brakes - new master cylinder, S.S. brake lines, added an oil cooler, PMA and Pamco, steering head bearings, needle bearing swingarm conversion, clubman bars, pod filters (rejetted), Loaded Gun rearsets...

    Oil smoke on trailing throttle

Hi All - Went for a Sunday blast with my step-son just before I came back to work on the ship. His '84 Interceptor is undergoing a rebuild so I loaned him my '77 XS650 and followed along on the BSA. It's the first time I've been behind her - was looking forward to hearing the exhaust note but...

    Please help! Random Increasing Idol!!

+1. I've read in a couple of other places that if loading the engine against the brake brings the revs down and they stay down, it's the ignition advance. If the revs drop and then pick up again when you pull in the clutch, it's the carburation. Regards,

    exhaust smoking causes?

I'm pretty sure Jack just vouched for them - and he knows his way around an engine...

Can we please put an end to the "long connecting rod" myth??

+1 on that! Still, the thread contains both passion and science - a good combination in motorsports! Thanks to all who contributed to a great read - I'm frequently amazed at the knowledge and experience which often remains unseen in these forums. Reminds me of the 'Triples Online' forum for...

    Cheap piston sets on ebay

Lots of people said they were Chinese but I suspect it was meant as a generalization. At the time (a couple of years ago), a couple of the more knowledgeable residents of the forums mentioned they were made in Taiwan. Cruzinimage also, apparently, makes big-bore kits for CB750 Hondas and one...

    Cheap piston sets on ebay

Ah.., Mr. Cruzinimage has expanded to Yamahas. He's been selling pistons on fleabay for at least a couple of years, now. There are a few long and occasionally quite heated threads on a number of other forums - the Kawasaki Triples forum for one - about the pros and cons of his pistons. Do a...

Hello XS650, first time cafe build from a '77 in Ontario Canada

...and you can strap a two-four on it for ease of carriage  Bike's coming along nicely! I'm wondering about the double disc in front, though. My '77 has only the single disc setup...

Anyone ever bought a seat from EBAY

Thanks, Marty. That green XS is just luverly - although after looking around I think I prefer the Airtech Dunstall replica 1/4 fairing - despite it being almost 4 times the price. Looks like it has a bit more sweep-back than the Emgo.

Anyone ever bought a seat from EBAY

Hi Marty - Do you know if that's a Viper fairing on your friend's bike? Or a Dunstall 1/4 replica? I can't quite tell from that angle. Whatever - the bike looks great! Thanks.

    Canuck saying hi

Hi Meesh - Greetings from Down East! There is! Convince her she needs her own bike! A nice Guzzi V50, Cagiva Alazzura, CB400F or similar would look dandy next to yours in the garage! And you could add it to your signature line - i.e: the CB550K, while living in my garage, isn't really...

    Question about clip-on bars

I have clubmans on my XS but like the look of the adjustable Tarozzi high rise clip ons and am thinking about them for my CBX. http://www.fastfromthepast.com/servlet/the-740/Clip-dsh-on-High-Rise-Handlebars/Detail Tommaselli make some nice ones, too.

    High Pitched Mystery Sound

Hi Dave - Just found this thread and it's been a fascinating 20 minute read :) You mentioned earlier that you rebuilt the engine. Did it make this noise prior to the rebuild? And did you rebuild the transmission along with the engine? If not, my thinking is that it wouldn't be anything in...

    Built-In Bluetooth Comms

Hi All - I'm wondering if anyone on the board wears a bluetooth-equipped lid which they use (predominantly) for inter-bike communications with their S.O. The lady in my life rides a CB550K and I'm thinking that voice communication would be a lot better than pulling alongside and exchanging...

not running good at low rpm

quote >>Spray carb cleaner around them with the engine running and see if the rpm's change. I'd be very careful spraying carburetor cleaner around a running engine. Most of them contain acetone, toluene, methanol and possibly propane and/or diacetone alcohol - Whoooosh!:yikes: WD40 should do...
