Top end tear down, how do you determine ring and piston wear limits?

Hey all, I've got a 79' and a 75' that are both burning too much oil. The 79' is so bad, it goes through 1/2 quart after 80 miles of riding! :yikes: Both engines have about 11000 to 13000 miles on them. The bottom ends are good, but they are both smoking out the exhaust and leaving oil on...

Smoke out of left side only ...

I've got about 100miles on the bike now, and it seems to be smoking out of just the left side. It also seems to be smoke a bit more than it did when I first noticed it. I have set and rechecked the timing and valve lash atleast four times just to be sure things are in order. Here's a pic of the...

    PMA Troubles ...

I went on my first "real" ride last weekend and about 40 miles into it, the bike died. It was a dead battery. I got a new battery and just made it home with the battery at 10 volts. I started poking around and I found the 20 amp fuse that is in the hot wire coming from the reg/rec was blown...

Front brake caliper will not "pressurize" ...

So I'm trying to get my front brake system bled, and I cannot get the pressure built up in the system to get the caliper to compress. I bought a brand new master cylinder, new braided lines, new pads, cleaned out the stock hose junction block, and rebuilt the old caliper. (1979 single front set...

Stock sidestand replacement, shouldn't be rocket science ?!?!

I bought a stock sidestand replacement from MikesXS, and for some reason the spring that came with the kit was about an 1/8" too long. The spring would just fall off with the stand down. So I shortened up the spring to maintain tension, and now the sidestand will not stay in the "up"...

Click when turning motor over ...

I've been getting my wiring done, and I've noticed when I turn the motor over there is a reapting clicking sound, which sounds like it maybe coming from the top end. The bike hasn't run in over two years, is it just because oil hasn't been through the motor in a long time? Or is it something...

    Missing washer ?!?!

I have been trying to figure out why I do not have the correct amount of clutch disengagement when I pull the lever? I lubed the new cable that I bought, and checked the cable to be sure it was not bound up. (good) Then I checked the adjustment of the wormgear. The adjustment nut was locked up...

    Clutch worm adjustment nut ...

I have almost now clutch engagement when I pull on the lever, so I went to adjust the worm assembly and this is what I saw. Please take a look at the pic attached. Does this look correct to everyone? And is it supposed to take the strength of a Lowland Gorilla to break the lock nut loose? :wtf:

Fuse box choice for the electrically challenged . . .

I know the popular choice is to install a bladed type aftermarket fuse box. But I'm very "challenged" when it comes to wiring, and to make matters worse the PO butchered the stock wire harness, and got rid of the fuse box all together. I bought the complete stock wire harness from MIkes XS and...
