Finally finished the paintwork and it looked great, for a short while!!
One day I got a few spots of gas spill on the tank & :wtf:
Turns out that in using 'standard' acrylic clear lacquer was a big no no.
It literally melts away when gas comes into contact.
Its OK for car panels and the...
Are Volts, Watts, Amps & Ohms metric?
I can't tell my weight in kg or lbs - I am 12 stone ! We also had hundredweight measures abbreviated to cwt !
How deep is a fathom? I can't work that one out !
How long is a light year in metric? I had heavy year in 2012!
Before the Farthing...
On the weights & measures subject in the UK:
We buy gas by the litre and measure consumption in miles per gallon!
We buy beer by the pint in a pub but its 568 millilitres in a can!
Speed limits are in Miles per hour
Distances are in Miles on the highways and carpet is in metres.

Thanks 2many & IaC I got the picture now, last finish color coat - no flatting. Flat in between laquer coats. That's the direction I was heading so confirmation is great.
The video was good to see, looks pretty much like I want my tank to look like.
I am using Hycote Acrylic 'Panther Black'...
Jeez, I don't go for runs but if so I flat out. I love the look that a final coat gives - all shiny & reflecting the pearl but then if I flat it plus a coat of laquer it seems to lose a bit of reflection. Trouble is if I then put the laquer on without flatting do I get a 'rough look' which I...
Hi Guys,
I have just gone back to bare metal on the tank and primer filler, flat it, primer, flat it, color coat, flat it, color coat, flat it, color coat, flat it with 1000 grade, final color coat - looking good.
Using R/C pearlescent black acrylic and now comes where I need the advice.
I...
Also, you may find that with CV carbs, too low idle rpm will cause cut outs as the airflow velocity drops with rpm, less vacuum is generated, the needle can settle lower into the tube and cause variation that dips below 'running' speed causing a stall.
Just a thought!
So an update,
I fitted the 5Ix11 needles using the second groove from the top from the clip because that aligned the start of the taper with the previous needle. It may be that the needle is richer as advised so a lower needle start point may not hurt?
One thing I noticed is that the new needle...
To close this item off.
I bought a wire and found the 1.6mm plate in my stack. Assembled as intended and looks good.
Found that I was one steel plate short now in the stack so somehow the clutch had been made to work without the boss assembly together, the clutch springs had been overtorqued to...
I am pretty cool now with your explanations DB, I just did not want to install a new needle and end up chasing the impossible dream!
The mods are straightforward so far, Ramair fitlers, straight thru 45mm headers & tail pipes.
I got the pilot jet & main jet sorted with those & then didn't want...
Thanks DogBunny,
I read or maybe misread the guide at amckayltd.com/carbguide and was not sure whether the reference:
'The 5 series needles in the later carbs, on the other hand, have 2 very
different tapers to them. You should notice a difference in the way the bike runs by
swapping them' as...
I thought I posted this question but it seems lost somewhere so I try again.
During the carb rebuild on my 'stock 81/34mm model I noticed the marking on the rebuild kit needle was different to the original.
Not the square in square but the identifiers.
The original is marked 5HX12; the new...
Hi all,
I just got to repairing my carbs and replaced most stuff OK until I came to the needle.
The one coming out carried the Identification 5HX12. The new one out of the packet was marked 5Ix11.
The original is worn so I don't want to go back but I can't find any discussion on what the...
Hey guys, thank you all for the valuable input.
The pictures were really priceless, I found a diagram but it was so fuzzy I did not know what to do next. see attached.
I have a good handle on the way forward now. I have checked the steels and not one is any thicker than another so I need a new...
I just got thru some measuring and the plain steel ring I have is 122mm dia. whilst the hub is 115mm diameter so a wire ring is not going to hold it in place with a 7mm difference.
I am Carbon shows a pic of a hub with a wire but it seems to have a plate held in position that has drive teeth on...
