Stock colour of a 1978 special.

Thanks, my green bike fits in 77/78 year. I am happy with that.

Stock colour of a 1978 special.

I replaced the silencers as we call them due to rust. A bit loud but I like them that way. Can I relate frame number to manufacture year?

    Spruce green.

Stock colour of a 1978 special.

I have the green. It came from USA to England where the registration here decided it is a 1977 and it's a standard.

    How rare is a 1978 XS650E standard?

Is there a photo of the XS650E special.. I have the roadster and would like to see the difference.

    How rare is a 1978 XS650E standard?

Mine has the green still and I love it. It does draw compliments too. It has a UK '77 registration, Oxford district but was imported from USA.

    Boyer Branson micro coil fitting

Sorry for the delay on this thread. I did complete the fitting by using 1" stand offs for the coil. It is fine and works well. Been used regularly this summer.

    Boyer Branson micro coil fitting

Daniel, is your indicator relay moved to somewhere else? Perhaps a smaller type? Very neat and slim.

What have you done to your XS today?

Sorry but I'm inclined to favour the white tank.

    Boyer Branson micro coil fitting

Very nice Meddy. It looks like you are doing a complete makeover. Mine looks more of a bodge job, there is a lot of other stuff in that area. The indicator relay sits between the 2 coils and is quite bulky. I might revisit if it works ok. Thanks all for your input.

    Boyer Branson micro coil fitting

Having removed the two original coils I thought there would be plenty of room for the new micro coil but it is an awkward shape. This makes it hard to fit under the tank. I have tried making brackets twice but neither worked out. Also the suggested way according to the instructions made it too...

    boyer branson fitting

Thanks chaps for your ideas. I have done it with the water pump type tool and green locktite. It's not ready for the strobe yet but I have one here now. The bike is a 77/78 E and still original green paint. Peanut, what is the Max advance error?

    boyer branson fitting

It's a simple question really but how do I hold the rod through the camshaft in place while adjusting the timing marks and tightening the nut on the right hand side? It's a 00303 kit with electronic advance.

    How rare is a 1978 XS650E standard?

Had mine (standard roadster) for 7yrs now, still love it. Classy colour green. It was imported here (UK) from the USA and was inspected by the registration guy and was deemed to have been manufactured in 1977 and so has a '77 plate. Suits me. I put lower bars on it and currently using non...

What is the average age of this group ?

Standard roadster in original green. I am 77 and just using the kicker less than the button. Waiting for the spring weather here in the UK.

    Ignition current drain

My '78 standard setup is a bit fickle on battery voltage, easily gets run down. Charging is good at 14v with lights on. I have measured the current taken when the ignition is switched on at 2 to 5 amps before starting, seems to depend on crank position. I try and get the motor started quickly to...

    Spark plugs

My standard set up has been fouling every month or so using NGK DP7ES. I haven't tried altering anything in the carb yet. Both plugs do it and they are fine for a while after cleaning. So I have been following this thread and interested in the results.

    ignition coils

Thanks all, some very interesting replies to look into. One thing while we are on the subject 5twins, which version of the Andrews do you use?

    ignition coils

Is anyone using the Andrew supervolt coils as mentioned in the Minton mods? I am in the UK but I can see them available in the USA. I do find my standard ones behave poorly using electric start unless the battery is fully charged. The kicker is fine which I prefer anyway but a bit extra would be...
