Single Stainless Brake Line Upgrade for 1976XS

GLJ, Cool that they had a banjo set up for the old style caliper . Looks like you used a single line from the MC. If I use a single line, my stock brake light switch will be out of the circuit. Perhaps the best route for me is an upper and lower brake line built up to connect with the steel...

Single Stainless Brake Line Upgrade for 1976XS

In order to retain the stock brake light switch in the original location, I am going to have two braided brake hoses made up. I see disk brakes in '76 and earlier used a steel pipe at the terminal end of the brake hose. I have a question for those who have experience specifying hydraulic hoses...

Single Stainless Brake Line Upgrade for 1976XS

Does anyone know how the length of Banggood brake lines are measured? Does that company use the total length, the center to center distance, or just the line between the banjo fittings?

Single Stainless Brake Line Upgrade for 1976XS

Thanks for the information & pictures... It would be nice to eliminate some of the joints using a single line, but I think I will go with braided upper and lower hoses for the sake of appearance & ability to use the stock brake switch

Single Stainless Brake Line Upgrade for 1976XS

It would look cleaner, wouldn't it. I'll need to look at the routing more closely, now that I am aware of the banjo bolt option.

Single Stainless Brake Line Upgrade for 1976XS

Thanks for the suggestion. I suppose the best location for this banjo bolt would be at the MC. Looks like I would have to extend the wiring, but you cant have everything.

Single Stainless Brake Line Upgrade for 1976XS

I've been looking through posts about this upgrade & I would like to replace upper and lower brake lines with a single stainless steel braided line. I haven't come across a discussion regarding the hydraulically activated front brake switch, which is located in the brake line joint (where the...

Carb Tuning with Commando Style Muffler

Thanks 5T. The needle jet o-rings were replaced two seasons ago when I treated the carbs to a good cleaning & the float levels were checked with a sighting tube. I'm glad to hear that a lean condition at high RPM wont poke a hole through the pistons. I am going to try one more adjustment...

Carb Tuning with Commando Style Muffler

Thanks for the feed back CDN. I guess dropping the needle another step would follow the traditional recipe. My concern is that would affect the pilot jet circuit (which up to now has been ok) & run into a whole new set trial and error adjustments there - I sure would like to avoid that...

Carb Tuning with Commando Style Muffler

I've been though a lot of threads and the carb guide; I believe I have a fair grasp of the concepts, but not much real-world experience. I hope to get a bit of feedback and maybe some creative ideas about how to proceed after making a series of air/fuel changes. This is a stock '76 that I...

    Swingarm question

For what it is worth, I just received and installed the bronze bushings from Mikes in my 77 this weekend. No problems at all with the fitment. As a side note, when I wanted to order one of those infamous starter gear kits, Mikes let me know that they rejected a batch because of a quality...

    Boring gasket question

...Or, you mess up the kick start spring like I did the first time I pulled the cover. Seems like a simple chore, but inevitably there is some unexpected twist - that's half the fun most of the time.

    Boring gasket question

I did the #4 starter gear fix last season. After a couple hundred miles, the right side cover gasket began leaking, so I am going to replace the gasket. While removing the original gasket from the cover (quite a PIA), I managed to put a few shallow scratches on the gasket surface. I know most...

    Lets talk Oil Sump Filters...

5T...what is the process you use to clean the screen prior to the application of the JB Weld? I was afraid the JB would chip off in the areas where the stuff gets thin - like near the edges of the repair.

    anyone tried this starter fix?

My #4 gear's teeth had at least 25% maybe 33% worn off the inside. I did not have the $ to buy a replacement kit. I used a vice grip so that I could control the addition of tension to the #3 clip. I stretched out the #2 return spring a bit before reassembly. I would say that even with the...

What's the furthest you have gone to buy a bike?

Drove three hundred miles to buy a 76. Two owner 14K mi bike. Lots of defered maintenance on this one - lucky on the ride home with no breakdowns. Ninety miles to buy my 77. Two owner 17k mi bike. Fairly well maintained except for rust in the tank and carb. Fuel system clogged up pretty...

    fork cap nuts

Make sure the pinch bolts holding the fork tubes at the top of the tripple tree are loose. Seems like it wouldn't make a difference, but it helps a bit.

Where or how did you find your XS650 ?

A friend of mine had a 76 in the family since it was new. The original owner sold it to his brother in the 80's. I heard it was for sale in Kansas (I live in Colorado) and thought it could be a father-son project over the winter. We drove to Kansas right after a big snow storm about a year...
