When you do a compression check, the motor turning over will pump oil into the cylinders. So, there will always be oil in the cylinders. Unless you are out of oil. And that's not good. If you get a low reading, put a tablespoon of oil in the spark plug hole and try again. If it goes up, rings are the issue. If it doesn't go up, valves are the issue.
