It is sometimes advantageous to be able to shed the electrical load of the lamps without interrupting ignition....and it remains leagl for pre 1973 (?) in our glorious republic....so let's see. it's ok to risk some riders and not others? Same for beanies...they don't make a material difference...but more significantly, they are a bald insult to to US Constitution, whether they bring benefit or not.
