Hi All

Please can some one clarify how the brushes on the alternator are wired up?

Firstly - is the inner brush wire green or brown?

I have fitted a simplified wiring harness and a solid state reg/rectifier unit so do the brushes need isolating from earth?

the bike is points ignition.
cheers

In North America, 1970 to 1979, points type bikes, used an earthed inner brush with a black wire. The outer brush should have a green wire. The outer brush is not earthed, because it is wired to the output of the voltage regulator.

You should post a picture of the wiring diagram you are using.

There are 2 types of the combined solid state rec/regs. One is designed to work with an earthed inner brush, and the other is designed to work with both brushes isolated from earth.
So, which type rec/reg do you have???
