BS 38 Carb Question on 72 XS2

Cannot believe that I am going to admit this, but here goes.

Can someone let me know what position the Choke/Enricher lever is in when it is "ON".

I have a 72 XS2 with original BS38 carbs. Is the Choke engaged when I pull the lever up or when it is down? Cannot remember. Yes I have tried it both ways with bike running but would like to know anyway.
