Charging system

My bike is not charging the battery-just started. How can I check to see if it is the altenator or retifier? I have never none this before so if you can be specific it will help me. I do have a volt meter.

check the brushes
-remove alternator cover
-brush holder has 4 screws (3 screws hold one brush, 1 screw holds the other), remove a brush and measure. put it back and do the next one. if they're worn below 7mm replace them.

The way the brushes mount depends on the year. Up to 79 they mounted the wayBlood said. 80 up used one screw on each.
Curly's guide will take you step by step through troubleshooting. You just need a multi-meter for testing voltages and resistance.
