The black on the barrels and head was likely applied from a rattle can. The original color was not black. I expect paint stripper will get it off. That is a messy job.

Thanks jet or Marty which do you prefer ..if its Jet I fell like I'm talking to a 1980 gladiator..look her up she was cute 😅😅...think I just need to regasket and rejet ...floats are OK just looking to replace all small internal .Bike run fine before I started to strip so might even try carb in ultra sonic cleaner

Marty is good. Thanks.

Yes. My practice is to dismantle the carburetors and clean them in the ultrasonic cleaner. I reassemble with new butterfly shaft seals and bowl gaskets. Also, stock jets. The engine should be easy to start that way. I adjust from there.

A raw, textured or rough surface on the cylinders and head is best for cooling. Even black paint, or any paint for that matter, will make it run hotter. I noticed this on my '83 with it's black painted motor. It runs hotter (and heats up quicker) than my "natural" finished '78.
