Can you kick start 81 xs 650 in 1st gear with clutch? My bike only kicks in neutral without clutch . Is this normal are is clucyh fed up ? Thanks

You can only kick start in neutral. All years XS.

+1 the kick start connects to the crank through the clutch pack. Many a newby thought they had no start / bad compression only to find out it was just a poorly adjusted clutch release.

It can be very hard to find, especially once the bike gets hot. Again, this is related to the clutch and its adjustment (or lack there of) usually. These bikes have very little clutch plate separation to begin with and anything you do to detract from that can cause hard shifting and neutral finding.
