73 xs650 cant get clutch to disengage.
pulled basket and checked for proper assy of washers/bearing etc. has long rod, ball bearing at each end.

as long as I don't lock down pressure plat springs it will ramp up and disengage but as soon as spring bolts tightened to shoulder it won't budge

any suggestions?

I luckily (LOL) have the type with no marks. In theory it is lined up with outer basket tooth 9:00 position, supposedly only one spring hole will line up this way

A few things come to mind right off the bat here. (1) Make sure you have the proper number of friction and steel plates and the proper satck height. (2) Do you have the proper springs in there? You could be getting into coil bind if you have the wrong springs in there. (3) Are you sure you have the correct bolts? If you have the wrong bolts you could actually be feeling the coil bind and not the bolt seating as it should.

In any case if you get into a coil bind situation the pressure plate will not move.

Post some pics of what you are working with and we can help more.
