Dismantling and re-painting early shocks.

If I'm going to spend good money on a proffesional paint job, I really think the rear units on my XS1B should be dismantled, dents and dings knocked out, painted and then re-assembled.
Just spraying them assembled smacks of bodgery to me, I might do that for a quick rattle can job.
Obviously I'm going to need a spring compressor, but what sort ?
I'm going to need something that won't scratch that expensive new paint on the upper shrouds.

I've got a spare set of shocks coming from the U.S. this week (honestly couldn't find any in the UK or Europe)
When they arrive I'll set to work fabricating my own version of the spring compressor - at my employers expense of course.
I've noticed that they've just bought in a new stock of 16mm and 22mm "all thread"
