DIY Fork Seals?

Pokin' around Fleabay for some dust boots to go along with the new fork seals headed this way. Found a set that looked to be right, went out to pop the old ones off to double check some dimensions and what do I find....

Well, either they worked pretty good.....or there's no oil in the forks

My guess is no oil. Not a lot there when you compress the front end. Original seals are still in place, think those were a band-aid. Secondary seals if you will.

The PO may have been a plumber or pipe fitter of some sort -- that's valve packing, and could very possibly contain asbestos.

Does look like a bunch of gland material. Should have used some oakum and caulked it in like a lead joint.

I scored a nice set fork gathers from Dime City..fits well...look good. Your fork tubes look good... Type in www.moron dot com.. and the fellows photo who did this " repair " pop's up
