Can someone tell me the difference between these 2 hubs? Im assuming the black wire is a brake switch? Why doesn't the other have one?

Hi Stoop,
better to ask, why did they ever install it?
The thing is neither use nor ornament.
BTW, it wasn't meant to operate the brake light, there's a different switch for that connected to the brake pedal;
it was meant to trigger a red warning light on the console that also warned of another failure (dunno what) so it just added confusion.
The two styles of brake plate interchange for the brake's real purpose of slowing the bike down.

It is the wiring for the brake lining warning light. When the shoes got low it would trigger a warning light in the rev counter gauge

In mid 77 they discontinued the warning system and just hacked off the mount.

The hub with the wire is a 77 or before the hub without the wire is 78 up.

Actually, the lower one without the wire is a '77 hub. They just hacked the wire mount off and didn't drill & tap the switch hole. In '78, they made a new "clean" casting without the wire mount.
