Short answer is ....Yes........If the motor is 80 or later with an electronic ignition you will need to buy the advance rod and bushings for the cam. Mikes sells a full kit for these models

Original charging system has to have a battery to run the bike. Ignition system and charging systems are 2 completely different set ups.
To run battery less you will need a PMA Charging system

I have all my electronics (paughco ignition, capacitor, horn & horn button) inside a Brinks Security box....running "battery-less" with a PMA....I attached some pix. Hope it helps a bit? Good Luck....just remember to start the bike w/o the lights on!!!
