The only difference between a permanent magnet alternator and a "self energizing" one is you create your own magnet with the application of electricity to the rotor..so if you can isolate the one grounded brush and apply voltage through the two magnets it makes the rotor magnetized. The rest happens when the rotor spins and is up to the stator....
