Hi guys in XS land

New to the forum but an avid follower of the build threads everyone puts up

Well heres my predicament....
I bought a miss match XS a while back, and a few projects have been finished so now its her time. But im having some trouble identifying my engine type/year using INXS's iD guide.

From my understanding its a:

77-78
XS-E special II

or

78-79
XS-SF

My engine number reads

Some clarity would be greatly appreciated :)

Please and thank you in advance
Cool Hand!

It really doesn't matter. They are identicle engines.
The 78-79 years can be a bit troublesome to identify. They made three models. The numbers don't appear to be model specific, they used the same number series on all three models. It can be a bit confusing.
Look on one list a bike maybe a 78 Special. On another it may be a 79 Special II.

Pics are really necessary here. In the ]*Caution* on this link....link here, The 78 Special II 4F0 250101 Is not a recognized model for an XS650. There has been some confusion surrounding the 250101 ID no being given to 2 different models in the same year prefix. I am finding that no, (250101), is for the 79Special II

There is a better Chart in this link. The chart in the first link has a few discrepancies that i have verified, (so far), with ID no's given to me

Frame code 2F0 Engine 2FO-150101 is a US 79SF. ............
Frame code 2F0 Engine 2F0-020101 is the US 79 Standard model.........
Frame code 3N0 Engine 2F0-250101 is the US 79Special ll

Should have the same no on the frame and engine

The Aussie models were 78SE 447-9000101. 79SF 447-910101.

The discrepancy in the chart has an 78E Special ll as a 78/79. 78/79 is an F, SF or Special ll. The chart also has E Special ll's but to the local knowledge/consensus there was never an E Special ll

Has the bike been registered before.....being a US model and if not you will have to check to see if it has been bought into the country as a legal bike or as parts

RG, i'm not to sure about the accuracy of that chart, i have found a lot of discrepancies. Has the 71B/F as a 70 and the XS2 as a 71 and the Aussie 80SG and 81SH as having CDI, (TCI), instead of points

650Skull.................you are likely correct..................link I posted may have errors. So many ID charts on the web, and accuracy has been lost through the years. Like all information on the web, it cannot be fully trusted for accuracy.

wow so theres a lot more to it than i thought. Ill get some pictures up in the next little while....
Im pretty sure its a bit of a mix and match parts bike. No word on if it was imported etc but I'm pretty sure it has been registered here in australia before.

Stay tuned for some pics

thanks again!

In '78, there were only 2 models, the Standard and the Special. The Special II didn't come along until '79. The regular Special had mag wheels, the Special II had spokes. Generally, the Special II had a few less chrome parts than the regular Special. It was the "budget" model.

Attempt #2....

Standard frame and wheels, 35mm front end, Special tank, (the Special tanks on the 78SE and 79SF had duel petcocks and from 80 on they had a single petcock), and a 78-79 Special rear guard. Exhausts and headers are from a Special.

Need to get the frame no to identify it, On the neck between the front forks. The Standard frame is the same from 74-79 but the 35mm forks were put on the bikes from 77 on.

I don't see a manufacturers compliance plate on the neck. Not required pre 75 or 76, i think, ( need some research), but i do know it is required from 77 on, may be 76 on.

Only way to tell the motor is from the no

....76C...... I found this on the Choppers Australia forum. Read down and a guy makes the claim 76 and earlier bikes don't need the manufacturers plate.

You will need to do some research to confirm or deny.
