Well ive noticed that when i fire the bike up the top end ticks for around a minute once running. It eventually goes away and from my automotive experience it ressembles a lifter ticking. I know i have enough oil.. so im curious could it be that my valves need adjusted? The ticking goes away after about a minute or so and its not a violent tick like a rod knock .. just a light tapping. I dont think its happening when im riding .. of course ive got a mini speedo thats kinda loud from the odometer cable spinning inside of it and ive got loud pipes so who knows.

Its got me confused..

Mine did that before I rebuilt the top end. The rubber strip on my front cam chain guide was coming unglued. I figure it was slapping against it's aluminum base for 30 seconds or so after start up until the oil splashed up and quelled the noise .....

You didnt specify year which can help some in suggestions. Check your valve tolerances first, that would be my running bet. After the oil gets splashed up there the tick is dampened. http://www.650central.com/fsetting_the_valves_on_an_xs650.htm

If it still does it... your cam chain may need to be adjusted... though thats usually a whine/tap-grinding. I dont have an easy link for you offhand for that one... http://xs650temp.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=EngineStock&action=display&thread=1327

Beyond that it gets bigger and bigger.

Hehe, to be honest I didnt notice. :(

In my defense... and for me to feel better about my stupidity :).... sometimes guys get a second bike and thats the one they are asking about.
