Hey guys, getting to my final stage in my 1981 XS650 project, if I can't find an exhaust, I may have to cut and put an universal muffler pipes on my bike, head pipes are good, mufflers are shot:doh: but which would fit mine from mikesxs?

Well, the problem with cutting your exhaust is two-fold. One, the cut makes your head pipes shorter than is prudent to mount most mufflers, so you'll need extensions or an imaginative mounting solution for the hangers. Two, the head pipes on your bike are double walled, so you cannot just clamp on a muffler and be done with it.

If you search I remember seeing a thread where I believe Pamcopete had a good write up on a mount & adapter solution for Specials using an off the shelf automotive exhaust pipe reducer.

Edit: Found the threads

Richard, I have a complete, relatively pristine system from a 78'XS Special. Here are pics. If you have an interest pm me.

We tried doing that in our project bike. Cut the exhaust can and install an universal muffler pipes which we bought online thru 4 Wheel Online. Honestly it looked good and sounded really great.
