Here’s a little update. Scored a tank off eBay, bought the wrong “special” gas cap lol. Took the sportster tank off and removed the seat so tank would fit. New old stock tank need to be lined and fitted with petcock and painted. Nothing is bolted down just resting on for visual purposes. Need to rig up a pin for rear of tank mount and c cups on the frame.

There’s a brace that needs to be rearrange in order for the seat to go back on. You can see it in the last pic over the rear tire.

Looks like I’m going to be doing some cutting/grinding and welding.

I’m contemplating whether to keep the seat or go the brat tracker look. I’ve always liked the flat tracker look and always wanted one, but after seeing a brat tracker. My brain started to turn.

Bike lives on the the step up in front of my wife’s car. Installed the tennis ball just to be safe 😉

Also another question, if previous owner rattle canned the rims. Is there a way to remove the paint? Would like to get them back to their stock look.
IMHO, the street tracker looks better. Good luck, we're all counting on you.

Is there more then one variation of “special” gas caps? I bought a gas cap stating it was for special from 78-84 but it seems too short. Here’s the link

Yes. there are variations and I can't tell you what swaps with what. I can go in my garage and experiment with a few, but not today. XS1100, 850, 750, 650, 400 Specials all look the same. I'm not sure which ones are identical. XS650 standards and XS750 standards also have the same cap, or almost the same.

If you're purchasing a cap from yamahaxs650.com, I fully expect it is the correct cap for an XS650 Special. The vendor is key here.
Contact him. Either he accidently sent you a standard cap, or your tank is not XS650 Special. The Special tank has the filler on the right side rather than the center.

The Standard models only had one fuse, a main 20 amp one located under the right side cover, so yes, it's possible to do away with the three 10 amp fuses on the Special model and just retain the main 20 amp one. Well, hopefully he retained that one, lol .

Appreciate the info and pics.

Got another question about lights. With the set up I described earlier. Should I keep all lights incandescent or am I able to run the incandescent headlight along with led blinkers and led tail light?

Apologize for the questions, noob over here

Incandescent headlight with LED tail and turn signals is fine. LED turn signals will require a no load flasher.
