My 79 needs a new alternator rotor, has never been rebuilt, and has 23,000 miles on it. I found an engine for sale locally that has been rebuilt, no idea on mileage, good alternator rotor, clean covers, excellent condition carbs.

I'm going to try to sell the carbs and swap the rotos, but after that...I'm stumped.

My bike runs good despite the high mileage, but it will need a rebuild soon.

What all should I keep or run from the spare engine? Is TCI worth switching or just ditching? Should I pull the head to inspect the rings? What am I looking for?

Well I wasn't really concerned yet on how to rebuild the engine, just store it and check the compression off the bike.

I learned that I should put Marvel Mystery oil or Seafoam in the cylinders and head to keep them lubed up and from seizing, give it an oil change, and keep it upright.

For testing the compression I should probably just either make a stand, and if its not stable enough that way, use the starter hooked to a battery.
