Half Moon Rising? Whaaaa?

Hey guys,
Just so I'm 100% on this, in the spot pointed out (not by me, but by Hugh) in this photo, I seem to only have a HALF circlip in my engine. Do I have a broken circlip? It seems in the fiche that it's only half of one. Why would that be? Why not use a whole circlip here if Yamaha is going to use one at all? Or am I mistaken and do I need to get a full 360 degree one? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Just a 1/2 clip. It's just for bearing placement on the shaft via the case. It's not a load bearing thing.

whats even weirder is I think there is a matching groove on the upper case half.

Kawasaki did the same thing on their KZ series.
